Fun Way to Explore Little Tokyo

This game was a lot of fun! I highly recommend for a group of any kind: couples, friends, and families would all enjoy it. We brought our child and we all had a great time. The game begins near Grand Central Market which is where we chose to begin looking at our materials over a cup of coffee. The game box was extremely organized, Escapely clearly labels what you will need for every puzzle, and the website for story and hints is super easy to use. This game takes you exploring throughout Little Tokyo and challenges you to approach puzzles creatively. A great way to visit the Little Tokyo area with a fun twist!

    Adventure Through Little Tokyo

This was a really fun and one-of-a-kind game that took us on a walking adventure through Little Tokyo in downtown Los Angeles. The puzzles were a good challenge (with hints available throughout if needed) and relied on the physical locations you were in to solve. The entire experience was a manageable walk and took good amount of time to complete – not too long and not too short! We got to discover some new places in our own city, and rediscover some places we had been before with a closer look.

The best Los Angeles escape room experience

About the escape room game

This escape room adventure around Little Tokyo takes the best parts of an escape room and the best parts of a scavenger hunt and merges them into the most fun thing to do in LA. You get to search for clues hidden in the real world and then use them to solve escape room puzzles. When you solve for a code, the app will tell you where to go look for your next clue! Instead of trying to escape the room, this Escapely adventure takes you around downtown Los Angeles to track down clues and expose double agents!

This real world escape room is the most unique escape room in downtown LA. It takes you on a clue-solving adventure to find clues, solve puzzles, and follow an immersive storyline. If you want to keep the experience a surprise, don't read this next bit - it contains some spoilers about where you'll go on our Little Tokyo escape room adventure and what you'll see along the way.

In Escapely's downtown LA escape room, you are a top secret spy tasked with exposing a ring of double agents threatening to take down the agency. We suggest starting at Grand Central Market in the heart of Little Tokyo. It's a vibrant upscale food court with an eclectic array of food choices - a great way to fuel up before starting the escape room. To get to your first clue, walk through a quaint alley to Biddy Mason Memorial Park. On the way, keep an eye out for the pasta making often going on behind big glass windows at the past shop you'll pass on your right. Biddy Mason was a freed slave who went on to amass some real estate wealth and became a prominent philanthropist. She owned the plot of land where this park now sits.

The next puzzle will take you to the Sister Cities sign, showing the distance from downtown Los Angeles to each of LA's sister cities. The next clue is the monument to Japanese-American astronaut Ellison Onizuka. He was the first Asian American as well as the first person of Japanese origin to reach space. He successfully reached space aboard the Discovery but sadly died in the Challenger explosion. You will then visit the Home is Little Tokyo mural which pays a colorful homage to Little Tokyo's history. In the center of the mural, you can see an adult and two children lighting candles, which is a tradition to remember the unjust treatment of marginalized groups throughout world history. To end the game, head into the Japanese Village Plaza which is just a few steps from the end of the game to enjoy some fresh takoyaki and other Japanese specialty food and shops!

LA escape room FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Yes, but it is not generally recommended unless you are a serious escape room enthusiast. It would be like playing an escape room that has the same storyline and similar puzzles, but with different clues available. Because the clues are integrated within Little Tokyo, the clues are different from all other Spyhunter games. But the puzzles will feel familiar.
LA's Little Tokyo is one of only three official Japantowns in the US (the other two are in San Francisco and San Jose). That alone is one of the reasons we chose this neighborhood for this outdoor escape room. Little Tokyo is a small neighborhood that is easy to walk around, so you can navigate the whole game on foot. The area is rich with history and of course, filled with delicious Japanese food. From ramen to gyoza to takoyaki, there are plenty of places to grab a bite to eat and drink after the escape room. The game ends at Little Tokyo Plaza, an outdoor mall for pedestrians only that has restaurants and shops, including one that sells official Sanrio merchandise. For an extra dose of culture you can visit the Higashi Honganji Buddhist Temple or the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center, which has a beautiful and peaceful outdoor garden.
It's both! In a traditional escape room you must solve puzzles that lead from one to the next to escape the room (or a series of rooms). In Escape the City you must solve puzzles that lead from one to the next, with clues in the real world. It's one of the best things to do in LA's Little Tokyo!
There are public garages throughout Little Tokyo. To be close to the start of the game, park near Grand Central Market. If ride share is an option, that's an easy way to get to and from the game. Once you're there, everything is in walking distance.
There are no indoor clues in our Little Tokyo escape room game. Everything is publicly accessible.
It's a self-guided adventure around Little Tokyo in downtown Los Angeles for couples, families, individuals, friend groups, and anyone else looking for a fun thing to do in LA!
